How to rank in the Google map pack
Short answer
Ranking in the Google map pack comes down to proximity, relevance and prominence. You cannot change proximity, so you win by choosing the correct primary category, filling out every service and attribute, publishing location pages with genuinely local content, and keeping a steady flow of real reviews that mention the service and the area.
The map pack is the three local results Google shows above the organic listings. For most local service searches it takes the majority of the clicks and nearly all of the calls.
Google weighs three things: how close you are to the searcher, how relevant your profile is to the query, and how prominent your business is online. Only two of those can be influenced.
The method, step by step
- 01
Fix the primary category first
Primary category is the strongest single relevance signal on a Google Business Profile. Match it to the service that makes you the most money, not to the broadest label available. Add secondary categories for the rest, but never dilute the primary one.
- 02
Complete every field, including the ignored ones
Services with descriptions, products, attributes, opening hours including holiday hours, business description, and the service area list. Profiles with complete fields rank and convert better because Google has more to match a query against.
- 03
Build review velocity, not review volume
A steady flow of reviews signals an active business. Ask every customer at the point where they are happiest, ideally by text with a direct link. Never buy reviews. Reply to all of them, and let customers naturally mention the service and the town.
- 04
Publish location pages that are actually local
One page per service area, each with local details: the neighbourhoods you cover, jobs you completed there, local pricing context, photos from that area. Spun pages with the town name swapped out do not rank and can pull down the whole site.
- 05
Post photos and updates on a real cadence
Geo relevant photos from real jobs, uploaded regularly, plus posts for offers and seasonal work. This is a freshness and engagement signal, and it also materially raises the click through rate of your listing.
- 06
Clean up citations and match your NAP exactly
Name, address and phone number must be identical across the major directories and data aggregators. Conflicting information is one of the most common reasons an otherwise strong profile sits outside the three pack.
- 07
Track by grid, not by a single rank check
Map pack position changes street by street. Use geo grid rank tracking so you can see where you rank across the whole service area instead of only from your own office, which is always your best result.
Key points
- Google ranks the map pack on proximity, relevance and prominence; proximity cannot be changed, so relevance and prominence are the work.
- Primary category is the highest impact single change on most Google Business Profiles.
- Review velocity matters more than total review count.
- Ranking outside your own address requires real location pages, and it takes months rather than weeks.

FAQ
Common questions
Profile fixes such as category, services and attributes can move position within two to six weeks. Ranking in areas where you have no physical address usually takes three to six months of location page and review work.
Sometimes, but it is harder. Proximity is a strong factor, so businesses physically closer to the searcher have an advantage. Location pages, service area settings and reviews mentioning that area help, but a fake address will get the profile suspended.
They do influence rankings, which is why the tactic is common, but adding keywords that are not part of your legal or signed business name violates Google's guidelines and is a frequent cause of suspension. It is not worth the risk.
There is no fixed number. What matters is being competitive against the other businesses appearing for that query in that area, and having a steady recent flow. Ten recent reviews often outperform 100 reviews that stopped two years ago.
